PETALING JAYA: The opposition is lying about a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to divert the people's attention from its own party problems, says Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah). 

The party's president Mohamad Sabu (pic), who is also the Defence Minister, said the rumours that Dr Mahathir would face betrayal from within the Pakatan Harapan (Pakatan) coalition was started by the opposition to blind its own members to the allegations of corruption among its leaders. 

"There is no pending vote of no-confidence against Dr Mahathir, and all Pakatan Harapan parties are right behind the PM in all his reforms for the country. 

"These rumours are being bandied around merely to divert the people's attention from the allegations and investigation into a few opposition leaders, as well as from the leadership crisis which has affected the trust of its members," said Mohamad. 

Although he did not name the opposition party, it is believed he was referring to PAS leaders who are currently being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the millions of ringgit that were allegedly transferred to the party's accounts.

"The opposition is trying to destabilise and disturb the Pakatan government which is working hard for the good of the people," said Mohamad in a press statement on Wednesday (Feb 20). 

On Sunday (Feb 17), PAS announced that the Islamist party would support Dr Mahathir until the next general election should he face betrayal from within Pakatan in a vote of no-confidence. 

PAS leaders claimed that they were informed that Pakatan parties were unhappy with Dr Mahathir. 

PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said all 18 MPs of PAS were willing to stand by the PM for the sake of race and religion. 

In response, Pakatan leaders have denied that such a move was being considered against the PM and accused PAS of concocting lies to destabilise the coalition.
