KUALA LUMPUR: The public is encouraged to cooperate with the police in crime prevention by registering as a member of the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP), said Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief said he personally read all the reports lodged via VSP.

“I hope the public can make full use of the phone app,” he said during a crime prevention walkabout here Wednesday (Feb 20).

Comm Mazlan said there was also a drop in crime statistics in the areas around the popular Low Yat Plaza last year, 

He said six fewer cases were reported in 2018 compared to 2017.

“There has been a 24% drop, with 19 cases reported here last year,” he said 

According to statistics from the city police, the majority of crimes in the area involved theft, with 13 reported incidents.

On an unrelated matter, Comm Mazlan said the cops were still in the process of interrogating the suspect who had allegedly beat up a woman on video during a robbery in a MRT station in Cheras recently.

“As of now he has confessed to another robbery. Our investigations are still ongoing,” he said.
