The chief executive of one victim, depositor Saigonbank Berjaya Securities JSC (SBBS) - a unit of Malaysia's Berjaya Corporation Bhd - told Reuters that if the ruling was upheld, she had little hope of recouping her bank's $10 million from the perpetrator, who was sentenced to life imprisonment. "We can't afford to lose the case. This represents 70 percent of our capital. Our business may get suspended," Josephine Yei said in an interview.

KUALA LUMPUR: The cargo division of Malaysia Airlines Bhd, MAB Kargo Sdn Bhd (MASkargo) is ready to tap into the global halal market worth US$2 trillion per annum, now that its halal shipments handling capability has received the Malaysian Halal certification.

The certification was issued by the Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM), Prime Minister’s Office.

“The global halal market is right now worth close to US$2 trillion per annum. I am happy to share that MASKargo is now part of the halal logistics chain; ready and capable of tapping the market,” its chief executive officer Ibrahim Mohamed Salled said in a statement today.

He said jointly with JAKIM, all the processes were reviewed and amended in order to meet the strict requirements of maintaining Halal integrity, besides adding additional facilities to cater to the need of maintaining segregation and separation between Halal and non-Halal shipments.

“We are most probably the first Cargo Terminal Operator in the world to be classified as a Halal cargo handler from a globally recognised and renowned Islamic Affairs Regulator for Halal products,” said Ibrahim.

Following the certification, MASkargo then shipped 720 kilograms of frozen food to japan under its Halal Logistics service via flight MH 088 which left Kuala Lumpur at 11.30 pm on June 24 and arrived in the Narita International Airport at 7.40 am the next morning.

The shipment was booked by Nippon Express (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.

Commenting on the shipment, the general manager of Nippon Express Halal Logistic Division Roslan Osman said the reality of an integrated halal supply chain is made possible by such collaboration between stakeholders in the halal ecosystem.

“A halal certification makes exporting products to Muslim markets much easier,” he added. - Bernama
